Rivers Casino Philadelphia Becomes Third Casino in PA to Voluntarily Ban Smoking

On April 29, Rivers Casino became the third casino to ban indoor smoking, alongside Parx Casino and Mount Airy Casino.

The change hasn’t been set in stone, with a press release confirming that the current situation was simply an extension of the temporary ban.

Rivers Casino Philadelphia has decided to extend its temporary ban on indoor smoking for now. An outdoor patio has been designated for smokers, and guests have complied without issue. Rivers Casino Philadelphia will continue to monitor feedback, which has been positive. Rivers Representatives

The momentum for the movement to ban smoking indoors comes mostly from casino staff and their unions. The primary concern is for the health of the staff.

Casino employees in New Jersey are taking their movement to the senate with the intention of getting smoking banned in casinos by law, and some Philadelphia casino workers praise their efforts.

Interestingly, both Parx and Mount Airy Casino have been smoke-free for over 10 months, with Parx banning smoking in June 2021 and Mount Airy remaining smoke-free ever since the initial mandate was lifted. Both Casinos have seen year-on-year declines in retail revenue from April 2021 to April 2022, with Parx down 9.34% and Mount Airy down 15.35%.
